In Jamz’s own words, “It’s a whole cocktail of emotions but I think the top note is relief. I’ve been at this for over 3 years now just working underground and putting development as my top priority. Granted, I was in school so I had to pay a lot of my attention to that, it still wasn’t easy to keep working and believing the day would eventually come. I’m also feeling a lot of gratitude and even some anxiety.”
“Sober,” tells a vivid story of love that’s gone sour, capturing the flood of emotions that follow. Jamz describes the song as an AfroRnB ballad, packed with reflective verses that paint a picture of realization and acceptance of the end of an era.
A Full Circle Moment
For Jamz, “Sober” is deeply personal. “It’s very personal to me. It’s a song I made very early on in my whole journey and so putting it out as my first ever single is like a full circle moment. It feels like ‘Yes! Your dreams are valid’. I’m so excited because I genuinely love this song and it just makes perfect sense as my first single.”
The Creative Process
The journey of “Sober” began with Jamz writing the song before her first studio session. Without an instrumental, she relied on a chord progression in her head, trusting her instincts. Fast forward to 2023, Jamz connected with producer NYRP, and they created the first demo. The record was briefly shelved as Jamz returned to school, but earlier this year, NYRP updated the beat, and the duo returned to the studio to re-record the track.
NYRP recalls, “Creating ‘Sober’ was great. We started making the record last year and kept recording it repeatedly, making changes to the music because we wanted it to sound just like we imagined. It’s one of the third or fourth songs that Jamz and I have made together since we
met. We recorded it in three different places and sessions. Jamz wrote it, and we worked together to arrange it into what you’re about to hear.”
