Nearly three years after her excellent sophomore LP, Trouble in Paradise, Shekhinah returns with her new official single “Risk” since then, filling the period of relative silence with a handful of feature appearances. Collaborating with Ghanaian American singer Moliy, the new song, “Risk,” feels like a page turn from the deeply introspective themes that marked her last album.
On the single, the pair cast aside the feeling of trepidation that sometimes accompanies the decision to commit to a romantic relationship.
Over a sleek and summery mid-tempo bounce, the singers outline the emotional weight of taking the plunge, promising to embrace the risk alongside their partners.
“If I jump in with my heart, please understand the risk/Please just try to be cautious, before we dive right in,” Shekhinah intones on the pre-chorus. Moliy adds a substantial dose of lust with her second verse, giving herself over to the relationship.
“Risk” reaffirms Shekhinah’s already proven ability to make relatable love songs that also double as catchy bops.
